Adult Recess - Pick Your Play at the Piedmont Learning Center
Time & Location
About The Event
Join us at the "retro-modern" Piedmont Learning Center, a not-for-profit outdoor learning center and working green space in Gwynn Oak Maryland, only a few yards from the edge of northwest Baltimore City, for an "equinoctial" evening of recess and respite. The Piedmont Learning Center is an urban dweller's delight and getaway not too faraway. As always, you can attend a Mixolo event with or without a plus-one. If you come solo, you're going to find your plus-some.
So, get out. Get environmental. We're celebrating Fall's equinox, the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from north to south. Well, maybe not THE moment, but we'll celebrate fall's arrival with a cider toast (spiked-optional) and take in the expansive grounds of this hidden gem right outside of historic Dickeysville and flanked by the beautiful 64 acre Gwynn Oak Park. The sun sets at 7:02 PM that evening. Perfect.
You'll no doubt feel nostalgic for the freedom the outdoors represented for you as a child playing in the park, going away to a relative's country home, sleep away camp or 4H, if you're of a certain age. Of course, age is of no consequence. There is no point in one's life where "recess" is off-limits.
Like the tune of this freedom so far? Good. You also get to choose your own adventure or zen, however you see it.
First, we'll toast the arrival of autumn, have a seasonal snack and meet our ex-strangers, new connections; then you can choose one of four activities:
>INTERACTIVE APIARY TOUR Suit up and see the bees as their beekeeper takes you on a tour through the inner-workings of a honey bee hive. See the different types of bees that make up a functional colony---try to spot the queen! PLC provides sting-proof suits and masks as well as gloves.
> ENGAGING GARDEN WORKSHOPS Learn about the culinary and daily uses of plants. See the various stages of growing and preserving herbs. Stuff an aromatherapy sachet, make your own tea. Check out the multiple rain gardens and explore their vital role in the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Learn how to cultivate your own edbile zen garden.
> ENVIRONMENTAL ART IMMERSION Make cool plant markers, paint a planter or birdhouse, create stone towers and expand creatively with the media offered by nature. We have the paint and brushes, your ideas help PLC colorize and energize the center's landscape! Your creations will be gifts to the learning center to help further their mission to proliferate values stewardship and service to the environment to all ages and maintain the beautiful aesthetic of the grounds for future visitors.
> WALKING TOUR Explore the grounds and gardens. Spot local wildlife and busy pollinators on their variety of regionally-selected native plants. Meander along the forest line and check out the nearly 200-year old refurbished smokehouse. Get the scoop on how they select, cultivate and maintain their gardens, the purpose they serve, and how to grow your own. (wear comfortable shoes for this easy hike - for your safety).
