Experience "Red Velvet"
Time & Location
About The Event
Join Mixolo solos, with or without a plus-one, at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company theater for Lolita Chakrabarti's groundbreaking play, "Red Velvet" about an unsung American superstar, Ira Aldrige, an African-American thespian pursuing a career as a Shakespearean actor in Europe in the 1800s. We're transported to London's Theatre Royal at Convent Garden in 1833, pre-emancipation in the United States.
We find Mr. Aldridge as an understudy for the legendary and memorable character, Othello, previously closed to actors of color in London. Prior to this coveted role, Ira had been enchanting audiences throughout Europe. While there are violent clashes in the streets over the United Kingdom's Slavery Abolition Act, Ira is participating in another revolution of sorts on London's premier stage as the play's lead falls ill and Ira is called to step in.
We'll enjoy a little pre-performance brunch history with Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) subject matter expert to prepare us for this revealing play that deftly reveals and tackles centuries-old beliefs and prejudices. Grit may be the new buzz word for resilience, but Ira's story of triumph in the face of overt objectification and rejection is one for the ages. True. Grit.
We'll start in the theater's stunning parlor with some light brunch nosh, fresh-squeezed orange juice or a mimosa and a late morning cup o' joe. Tea for the naturally wide-eyed. After brunch, we'll enjoy the matinee production with our new connections.
What's included in my ticket price?
We'll gather early at 1:00 PM to connect and engage in a semi-private space for our Mixolo group and enjoy a light pre-performance brunch and pre-show "meet the director" before we enjoy the 2:00 PM performance of Red Velvet at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company theater.
Additional beverage choices are available self-pay at CSC's in-house bar.
