About The Event

Join Mixolo, the solo-friendly social network, and let's (Bike)share the love and unite Baltimoreans and other curious travelers with Baltimore's greatest attractions by bike. See Baltimore. See other people. No plus-one required.

For our Mixolo bike tour in our beloved beta city, Baltimore, using our convenient, state-of-the-art Bikeshare system, we want you to "Act like a tourist, and think like a resident" as we take a guided ride through Southwest Baltimore. It's easy to access many parts of the city using Bikeshare bikes.

On our inaugural "Love the City You're With" tour, you'll connect with your fellow riders and engage with our gracious, solo-friendly hosts in Southwest Baltimore who are preparing for your arrival during our tour. You'll be glad you came.

The neighborhoods in this oft-overlooked area of the city are steeped in history, cultural diversity and still supporting unique small businesses that make you feel like you have stepped into a welcoming home.

Every city has its struggles, but it's up to us to love our city through the best and worst of times. If not us, who? It takes more than that one new and shiny neighborhood for a city to thrive. When our city thrives, we all thrive.

Who else is involved?

The Mixolo community is partnering with the dynamic Southwest Partnership, made up of the seven culturally distinct, yet inextricably connected, neighborhoods in Southwest Baltimore, Southwest Baltimore Athletic community organization, and Bewegen Technologies, provider of Baltimore's cutting-edge Bikeshare bikes, and the easy-access system, including convenient docking stations, a mobile app and built-in GPS in every bike.

All three of these organizations, along with our hosts, are aiming to elevate the urban experience for the better. A perfect fit for Mixolo as we promote the city where we launched. Baltimore deserves some love - from its own. Our event is not just for Baltimoreans, but our faithful "tourists," from near and far who love this town or just want to get to know it better.

Our tour guide will be the "Queen of the Bike Tour Guides" in Baltimore and beyond, the endearing Penny Troutner, owner of Light Street Cycles located in the South Baltimore neighborhood of Federal Hill. Fresh off her dedicated work for Baltimore's now iconic Light City festival, her contributions to Baltimore's cultural landscape are too numerous to account for here. She knows her history and she is ready to (Bike)share it with our riders.

What will we see and do?

Our solo-friendly hosts in Southwest Baltimore are ready to welcome you into their "homes."

We'll start in the unique (like every Baltimore 'hood) Union Square neighborhood of SOWEBO where we we'll gear up with our bikes and get the essentials on bike use and safety.

Culinary Architecture will be the first stop on our tour because "First we eat, then we do everything else," according to pre-eminent American Food Writer, Mary Frances K. Fisher. Culinary Architecture marketplace and caterer uses only the freshest of ingredients in their delicious food, always handmade in small batches.

We'll tour two National Historic Landmarks! We'll take in the majestic B&O Railroad Museum, home to early 200 pieces of locomotives and rolling stock and other artifacts, and Mount Clare, Maryland's first museum house, built in 1760 by Charles Carroll, Barrister, a distant cousin of the signer of the Declaration of Independence. You'll have to brace yourself for the view of the city from Carroll Park where the house currently stands. Selfies strongly encouraged.

We'll visit and do lunch at the impressive, two story 17K + square feet Hollins Market in Pigtown/Washington Village the oldest public market in Baltimore City, built in 1877 and once a supply stop for nearby Civil War Soldiers. Zella's Pizza and Primo Chicken will provide our lunch fare with options to satisfy a few of the food-isms.

Many consider Hollins Market the heart of SOWEBO, another name for Southwest Baltimore. We'll take in an exhibit curated by UMBC students which chronicles much of the history of SOWEBO and Baltimore through newspapers. And we'll take a walk back in history to notable landmarks in the vicinity.

We'll also visit a site and monument to a darker period in our history that we must not overlook. A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. - Marcus Garvey

Because what's old is sometimes made new, post-tour, all who are interested may gather at the shiny new "homebrewery," Suspended Brewing in Pigtown for refreshments and a recap of our amazing day.
