About The Event

Sit with Mixolo for A Wonder in My Soul at Baltimore Center Stage. No plus-one required. Note: Purchases after December 17 may be seated separately as tickets are selling fast. We will still have a chance to connect, but we may not be seated together.

Beauty shops are the epicenter of female bonding, and, replete with wacky customers and sage stylists, they seem to lend themselves to theatrics, pathos and chuckles. Marcus Gardley has adapted his play, A Wonder in My Soul, to a new Baltimore setting, a seamless transition from its original Chicago locale.

Faced with the realities of gentrification and crime, two longtime salon owners – and lifetime best friends – face an agonizing choice: should they abandon the neighborhood where they’ve done business for decades?

Gardley, a poet and playwright, gets the characters (the owners and their younger selves, the police officer daughter, the Republican customer who likes to be referred to as the First Lady) right. The story is told in language imbued with poetry, and is underscored with profound and stirring music.

Please plan to stay after the performance for "Afterthoughts," a discussion about the play and its thought provoking themes, usually led by the director and dramaturg.
