About The Event

You can sit with us as we witness an American story of San Francisco’s changing Chinatown through the eyes of “new generation” award-winning playwright, Lauren Yee, in her clever and endearing family comedy, King of the Yees.” No plus-one required.

Lauren Yee’s semi-autobiographical meta-play centers on her father, Larry, who is committed to preserving the family’s cultural history through the patriarchal Yee Fung Toy Family Association – an all-male organization that leaves his daughter cold.

When Larry goes missing, Lauren takes off to find him, in a race through contemporary San Francisco’s Chinatown and into her past, meeting a raft of Yee relations along the way. The journey has plenty of humor, as well as frank confrontation of Asian-American stereotypes. King of the Yees premiered in simultaneous productions at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and the Gateway in Vancouver.

Note: Stay for a talkback after the performance with a new Baltimore-based collective of Asian-American artists. Cori Dioquino, co-founder of Baltimore Asian Pasifika Collective (BPAC) and renowned actress on stage and television, will lead the panel discussion on this major work by Lauren Yee.
