About The Event
Come out with or without a plus-one and enjoy “She Stoops to Conquer” with other classic theater enthusiasts. You can sit with us.
We want you to join us for another Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) production that takes us back, yet keeps us planted firmly in the present. “She Stoops to Conquer,” by Oliver Goldsmith, challenges class and gender norms in the 18th century and arguably now, three centuries later, with irreverent humor.
As with all CSC productions, audiences can connect to Shakespeare and classic works, like Goldsmith’s play, in ways that are fresh and innovative. She Stoops to Conquer is an early – and enduring – sitcom. In this bawdy 18th century comedy of manners, Kate Hardcastle does her due diligence on a prospective suitor–a gentleman more at ease with the household help than with the upper crust–by donning the disguise of a maid. Hilarity, of course, ensues.
Unlike most previous Restoration works, Oliver Goldsmith’s play entertained by skewering social conventions and poking fun at the well-to-do. The New York Times has described the play as “a comedy of its time, for all time.” And after it opened in 1773, prominent English writer, Samuel Johnson, called She Stoops to Conquer the greatest play of the era.
MORE ABOUT OUR HOST (from their website):
The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) began in 2002 with a small group of artists committed to changing how people think about Shakespeare, by producing shows that allowed audiences to connect to classic works in whole new ways – ways that are fresh, innovative and sustainable.
The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company Theater and cultural center, located near the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore, opened in September 2014. This achievement was made possible with the support of devoted audiences and individual, corporate, philanthropic and governmental partners. CSC transformed a 19th Century landmark bank building into a modern 260-seat theater inspired by Shakespeare’s Globe.
In just 12 years, CSC has become a leader in the Maryland cultural community. The company is known for engaging and entertaining audiences in unique and intimate performance environments, and for making opportunities for conversations among audiences, artists and the wider community.
Our Mixolo group typically gathers before showtime about 30 minutes before curtain. The CSC performance begins promptly at 8:00 PM, however, please plan to arrive at 7:30 PM for a smooth evening.
Chesapeake Shakespeare company offers light snacks and a variety of beverages at its two bars in the theater.
Chez Hugo, a French bistro, is located next door to the theater, for your convenience. Please let us know if you would like to meet for a casual happy hour (self-pay) to get to know your seatmates. Teetotalers always welcome. Chez Hugo serves delicious small plates. Please email Mixolo at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in gathering there from 6:00PM - 7:30PM, before the performance.
Guests will be able to park in a covered lot at Arrow Parking on Water Street. Arrow offers $5 parking when you provide them with a CSC coupon (available inside the theater) upon exiting the garage. The well-lighted garage is located one block south of the theater, with entrances on both Lombard and Water Streets between Calvert and South Streets.
