About The Event

Spring is coming! Daylight hours are expanding... Join Mixolo's adventurous solos - and early risers - with or without a plus-one as we take a cue from an episode of "Portlandia" and go on a Table to Farm excursion to consume and trace our organic and responsibly raised food products right to their farm of origin. We'll start with a rise-and-shine breakfast at P.A. Bowen Farmstead, a hop, skip and a jump from DC, Virginia and Baltimore (respectively). Then we'll meet the cows responsible for their award-winning cheeses, among other notable contributors to our meal. Our tour will include a sneak peek at the farm's award winning cheese making operation. So good!! No meat on this menu. We can avoid that "too soon?" feeling...

While Brandywine, Maryland, an hour or more from most major cities in the region might be most often frequented for, coincidentally, wine, another destination deserves a closer look. Mixolo wants you to escape the metro to retro farm, PA Bowen Farmstead, arguably the region's most ambitious and conscientious multi-species family farm on the east coast.

The P A Bowen Farmstead, “pasture-esque” Southern Maryland. is a mixed-species pasture-based farm incorporating, organic and bio-dynamic methods. The farm is a study in contrast to the monoculture farms that have replaced many of America's family farms and currently reign over our food supply. Owners Geoffrey Morell, a medical intuitive and generational farmer with New Zealand origins, and Sally Fallon Morell, a leading author on nutritional science and advocate for nutrient-dense foods, are deftly modeling a return to naturally raised foods with a healthy respect for the impact of farming (and grazing) methods on the land and environment, not to mention the health and wellbeing of nature's two-legged animals.

The near self-sustainment of the farm is no small feat, but the Morrells and their devoted “farm family” have a little help from nature's gifts. We'll meet Harrison the goose, (named after a former super-intern at the farm) who guards the farm against foxes and other predators. The pigs clear the woods for grazing for the cows; the cows provide fertilizer and the farm's superior quality eggs, raw milk and eggs.

Our tour may have you re-examining the current societal backlash against meat and dairy products. Is it the animal or the process? We are not looking to convert those souls that can't eat anything with a mother, but, rest assured, the animals are treated with great care.

What's included in my ticket price?

You’ll l enjoy a hearty breakfast with fresh ingredients sourced mainly from the farm’s food supply in a PA Bowens event space and barn with the farm’s founder and management team. We’ll have a guided tour (for Mixolo members only) of the entire farm operations.

Coffee, hot tea, juices, fresh milk from the farm and water will be served. One featured breakfast cocktail will be available. This is an early morning tour that will involve a considerable drive for most participants. We’ll wrap up our morning with a tasting of PA Bowen’s award-winning cheeses.
