World Premiere: SOUL the Stax Musical at Baltimore Center Stage
Time & Location
About The Event
I influence people - hopefully on the positive side.” -- the late Isaac Hayes, recording artist for Stax Records
“When I was a kid, I was following black soul music.” -- Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin).
That was then and it’s coming back now! Join Mixolo solos for the world premiere of SOUL the Stax Musical at Baltimore Center Stage, a celebration of the sound of American soul music and the iconic artists that came out of the groundbreaking Memphis-born Stax record label. See this highly anticipated musical premiere and share the experience with other like-minded theater enthusiasts. No plus-one required.
Whether you miss - or missed - the Rhythm and Blues explosion in the 1960s, you can relive music history and American history in one night, one musical, written by Matthew Benjamin and directed by Baltimore Center Stage former Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah. To close out seven transformative years at Baltimore Stage, Kwei- Armah is returning to the U.S. for this ambitious Baltimore Center Stage production after recently assuming the role of Artistic Director at Young Vic Theater in his native London.
The performance is filled with timeless hits, but also provides a thoughtful examination of the endearing and lasting sound of this original record label and its impact as a uniting force for many during the turbulent 1960s. Stax artists like Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Booker T & The MG's, Rufus & Carla Thomas, David Porter, Wilson Pickett, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd have all influenced a multitude of music genres, from rock, to pop, to the “retro” or neo-soul movement today.
The list of accomplished music artists who pay tribute to the Stax legends is stellar, international and multi-generational across genres. Their songs have been re-re-re-released, covered, sampled and "memed."
Record albums are making a comeback. Now, so are the hits for all to enjoy - again.
If you’re kicking yourself for missing Kwei-Armah’s masterpiece, Marley, a musical based on the life of the legendary Bob Marley which went on to critical acclaim on the London Stage, stop that and do this. If you saw Marley, then come out again as Kwei-Armah solidifies his legacy of memorable performances with this musical tour de force featuring American soul music.
